Description

The 100-acre (40-hectare) Zoo¹ is home to over 3,700 rare and endangered animals representing more than 650 species and subspecies, and a prominent botanical collection with more than 700,000 exotic plants. It is also one of the few zoos in the world that houses the Giant Panda and it is located just north of downtown San Diego in Balboa Park.

The San Diego Zoo and the San Diego Zoo Safari Park are accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, the American Association of Museums, and the Zoological Assocation of America.

Key Symbol numbers for Shopping and Dining. When you encounter an individual trail sign along one of the trails inside the zoo, ignore the Key Numbers for Dining and Shopping on the sign. They have not been updated.

You can obtain a list of the machine locations² (sadly, out of date) at the Zoo Information Booth which is located immediately behind the baby elephant statue which will be on your right just after you pass through the Entrance turnstiles. Some of the volunteers are not aware of this list, but copies are kept on hand for us penny collectors. If you persevere, they will hunt it up for you.

Machine 1: DISCOVERY OUTPOST, Zoo Locator 1, Front Street, Across from Poppy’s Patio (Dining Key 1), In an outdoor dining seating area, next to two small booths offering face painting and small souvenirs.(along with Machine 3 & 12).

Machine 2 location is the Panda Shop. Bottom of the park by the Pandas.

Machine 3: DISCOVERY OUTPOST, Zoo Locator 1, Front Street, Across from Poppy’s Patio (Dining Key 1), In an outdoor dining seating area.(along with Machine 1 & 12).

Machine 4: DISCOVERY OUTPOST, Zoo Locator 3, Front Street, at the walkway to Safari Kitchen (Dining Key 9). The machine is only a few yards off of Front Street to your right.

Machine 5: OUTBACK, Zoo Locator 8, Sydney’s Shoppe south door, about 50 feet away from Machine 10.

Machine 6: AFRICA ROCKS, up Front Street from Zoo Locator 10, Tusker’s Trunk Store (Shopping Key 8 – This machine was not on the Zoo’s list of machines.

Machine 7: ASIAN PASSAGE, Zoo Locator 13, Junction of Park Way and Center Street, At rear door of Panda Shop (Shopping Key 9) adjacent to Canyon Cafe (Dining Key 7) along with Machine 11.

Machine 15: OUTBACK, between Zoo Locators 8 & 9, Front Street, In front of the Wombat Exhibit, just south of the Camels.

Machine 16: POLAR RIM, Zoo Locator 17, Park Way, in front of Arctic Trader (Shopping Key 13).

Machine 17: ZOO EXIT, Zoo Locator 2, Front Street, Zoo Store (Shopping Key 5). This machine is in the doorway across the walkway to your right.

Machine 18: ASIAN PASSAGE/URBAN FOREST, Zoo Locator 11, Center Street at the upper end of Sun Bear Trail, Next to the foot massagers at Joey Jumpers & Ayers Rock Climb.

Machine 19: BUS LOADING/UNLOADING, between Zoo Locators 5 & 6, Front Street, Next to Camera Den #2 (a small kiosk for making personalized Zoo postcards with your picture on it).

Machine 20: ASIAN PASSAGE, Zoo Locator 13, Junction of Park Way and Center Street, At front door of Panda Shop (Shopping Key 9).

Retired: Celebr80, Polar Bear Plunge (quarter and penny), Syndey Koala, Hippo Beach, Flamingo Lagoon, Hua Mei (Panda – the first panda born at the zoo. She was sent to China several years ago and the machine retired.)
